EYFS

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Manuden Primary School

At Manuden Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision lays the foundation for lifelong learning and supports every child to grow, thrive, and achieve their full potential. We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where children feel valued, inspired, and supported. Our EYFS approach aligns with the statutory framework set out by the Department for Education, ensuring that all children experience high-quality early education.

Our Team

  • Class Teacher: Sophia Evans

  • Classroom Learning Support Assistant (LSA): Shelley Gayton

Both members of our EYFS team hold up-to-date Paediatric First Aid certification, ensuring that children are cared for safely and that we can respond quickly and appropriately to any accidents or medical emergencies.

EYFS Curriculum

Our EYFS curriculum is designed to foster curiosity, independence, and a love of learning. It is based on the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2021) and structured around the seven areas of learning and development:

Prime Areas:

Communication and Language – Developing listening, attention, understanding, and speaking skills.

Physical Development – Supporting fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and healthy lifestyles.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development – Building confidence, self-regulation, empathy, and positive relationships.

Specific Areas:
4. Literacy – Fostering early reading and writing skills, including phonics and storytelling.
5. Mathematics – Introducing numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving skills.
6. Understanding the World – Exploring science, history, geography, technology, and the natural environment.
7. Expressive Arts and Design – Encouraging creativity through art, music, dance, and imaginative play.

Learning in EYFS is play-based, child-centred, and highly adaptable to children’s interests and needs, ensuring engagement and meaningful learning. Children experience a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities, promoting independence and confidence.

Assessment and Progress

We follow the statutory EYFS assessment requirements, including:

  • Baseline Assessment (Reception Baseline Assessment - RBA): Conducted at the start of Reception to help us understand each child’s starting point.

  • Ongoing Observations and Assessment: Teachers regularly observe children to monitor progress and inform planning.

  • Early Years Profile: At the end of the EYFS, we assess each child against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) in all seven areas of learning.

This assessment allows us to tailor learning experiences to individual needs and ensure that every child receives the support and challenge they require.

Inclusion and SEND Support

Our EYFS provision is inclusive and accessible. Quality first teaching ensures that all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), can fully participate and thrive. We make reasonable adjustments and provide additional support where required, enabling all children to reach their potential.

Learning Environment

Our EYFS classrooms and outdoor spaces are designed to encourage exploration, creativity, and independence. Children have access to:

  • Well-resourced indoor and outdoor areas.

  • Continuous provision that supports all areas of learning.

  • Opportunities for collaborative and independent play.

  • Resources to support sensory development and wellbeing.

We also prioritise positive relationships with parents and carers, encouraging partnership through:

  • Daily communication and feedback.

  • Parent workshops and stay-and-play sessions.

  • Sharing learning and progress through regular updates.

Preparing for Year 1

Our EYFS curriculum prepares children for a smooth transition to Key Stage 1 by:

  • Encouraging confidence, independence, and resilience.

  • Developing early literacy, numeracy, and social skills.

  • Building a positive attitude to learning and curiosity about the world.

Our EYFS Vision

In line with the Manuden WayGrowing hearts, Growing minds, Growing dreams – our EYFS provision nurtures every child’s potential. We aim to create a foundation for a love of learning, social responsibility, and personal growth, ensuring that children leave Reception ready to thrive in Year 1 and beyond.
