Mathematics at Manuden

At Manuden Primary School, we want every child to become a confident and successful mathematician.

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to develop secure understanding, fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. We want pupils to understand why mathematics works, make connections between ideas and apply their knowledge confidently in different contexts.

We believe that all pupils can succeed in mathematics with high-quality teaching, appropriate support and opportunities to think deeply about mathematical ideas.

How We Teach Mathematics

Mathematics is taught regularly across the school through carefully sequenced learning.

We use White Rose Maths to support curriculum planning and progression. Its small-step approach helps pupils build new learning securely from what they already know.

Teaching includes:

• explicit modelling and explanation;
• practical resources and manipulatives;
• visual representations;
• opportunities to develop mathematical vocabulary;
• regular practice to develop fluency;
• reasoning and problem-solving;
• opportunities to explain and justify mathematical thinking; and
• retrieval and revisiting of important prior learning.

Teachers adapt lessons in response to pupils’ understanding while maintaining ambitious expectations for all learners.

Number and Fluency

Developing a secure understanding of number is a central part of our mathematics curriculum.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, Mastering Number supports pupils to develop strong foundations in number sense and fluency.

As pupils progress through the school, they continue to develop increasingly efficient calculation strategies, secure recall of key number facts and confidence in working with increasingly complex mathematical ideas.

Mathematics in Our Mixed-Age Classes

Our mixed-age mathematics curriculum is carefully organised so that pupils receive teaching that reflects the expectations of their individual year group.

Teachers use assessment and curriculum progression to identify pupils’ starting points and ensure that learning builds systematically over time.

Within mixed-age classes, pupils may explore related mathematical concepts while teaching, questioning, practice and expected outcomes are adapted appropriately according to year-group expectations and individual need.

Fluency, Reasoning and Problem-Solving

We want pupils to do more than carry out calculations accurately.

Children are taught to:

• recall and apply important mathematical facts;
• select appropriate strategies;
• recognise patterns and relationships;
• explain their mathematical thinking;
• use precise mathematical vocabulary;
• reason about whether an answer is sensible;
• solve routine and unfamiliar problems; and
• persevere when mathematics is challenging.

These skills enable pupils to become increasingly independent and flexible mathematicians.

Supporting All Learners

Teachers use assessment continually to identify what pupils understand and where further support is required.

Support may include:

• additional modelling;
• practical resources and manipulatives;
• pre-teaching or additional practice;
• targeted intervention;
• adapted tasks or representations; and
• additional adult support where appropriate.

We use Number Stacks where appropriate to support pupils who need targeted teaching in key areas of number.

Support is designed to address gaps while enabling pupils to participate fully in ambitious classroom learning.

Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of mathematics teaching.

Teachers use questioning, observation, pupils’ work and regular assessment activities to identify what pupils know and understand.

Assessment information is used to:

• identify misconceptions and gaps;
• inform future teaching;
• provide appropriate support or challenge; and
• monitor pupils’ progress over time.

Mathematics Beyond the Maths Lesson

Pupils have opportunities to apply mathematical knowledge in other areas of the curriculum and in meaningful real-life contexts.

This may include measurement and data in science, chronology in history, scale and coordinates in geography, or practical applications involving money, time and measurement.
