Mathematics

Mathematics at Manuden Primary School

A small school with big ideas... Growing hearts, Growing Minds, Growing dreams!

Our Intent

At Manuden Primary School, we believe mathematics is a vital tool for understanding and engaging with the world. Our curriculum is designed to nurture confident, curious learners who can think logically, solve problems, and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.

Rationale

Mathematics equips children with a unique lens through which to view and make sense of everyday life. It supports learning across the curriculum and helps pupils develop fluency in key mathematical concepts. We aim to foster a deep understanding of mathematical ideas, encouraging children to become independent thinkers and problem-solvers.

Ambition

From the Foundation Stage through to Year 6, all children receive daily Maths lessons. We embed core concepts early, allowing pupils to build on prior learning and deepen their understanding over time. Our ambition is for every child to develop mathematical skills alongside conceptual understanding, ensuring they are well-prepared for future learning.

Concepts

Our curriculum ensures that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied practice and increasingly complex challenges.
  • Develop strong conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by exploring patterns, making conjectures, and justifying their thinking using precise mathematical language.
  • Solve problems by applying their learning to both routine and non-routine contexts, breaking challenges into manageable steps.

Our Implementation

We are committed to delivering high-quality mathematics teaching that is inclusive, engaging, and effective.

Subject Knowledge & Leadership

Our Mathematics Leader supports staff through ongoing professional development, ensuring strong subject knowledge and pedagogy. This includes regular engagement with the Essex Maths Hub, which provides training, resources, and collaborative opportunities to enhance teaching practice. Leadership in mathematics is driven by passion and expertise, with staff meetings, coaching, and lesson observations supporting continuous improvement.

Equitable Delivery

Daily maths lessons at Manuden are designed to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. We use a variety of teaching methods to ensure all children are engaged and challenged appropriately.

Planning the Progression Model

All classes follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, which offers a structured and coherent progression across year groups. This is complemented by:

  • Mastery of Number – A programme that strengthens number sense and fluency, especially in younger pupils

Assessment

Children’s progress is continually assessed using:

  • Day-to-day formative assessments (e.g. quizzes, mini whiteboard tasks)
  • Termly  tests
  • End-of-unit summative assessments
  • Pupil progress meetings

This ensures teaching is responsive and tailored to individual needs.

Intervention & Support

We use targeted interventions to support pupils who need additional help:

  • Number Stacks – A structured intervention programme that builds confidence and understanding in key number concepts.
  • Manipulatives – Practical resources such as Numicon, place value counters, and bead strings are used to support conceptual understanding and make abstract ideas more accessible.

Breadth and Depth

Our flexible teaching styles allow children to work independently or collaboratively. Tasks are adapted to suit different learning needs, ensuring all pupils are appropriately challenged and supported.
